El obrador de la familia Cuentas en Guadalajara

Published in Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, 2010

Scattered records exist concerning painters from Guadalajara, or those who worked in the city during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One such artist is Diego de Cuentas, about whom some biographical information and a considerable number of works in various cities across Mexico are known. However, the limited documentary research conducted to date on colonial painting in Nueva Galicia has prevented scholars from expanding their knowledge of this artist since 1960. This article aims to provide new information about Diego de Cuentas and his family, as well as the dynamics of work in his workshop, through evidence documented in the legal proceedings brought by his grandson against his uncle over the sale of a house.
